What You’ll Get In This ‘Beginner Horse Training’ Course Module:

Do you want to learn the basics of horse training? In this course module, we will be covering the fundamentals of groundwork. Groundwork is crucial and an integral part of natural horsemanship. You need to have good grasp of this before actually mounting the animal. But before going into that, however, horse training terminologies should be made clear first.

Here are some of the beginner horse training terms and concepts you’ll get in this lesson:

  • Natural Horsemanship – The process of understanding and speaking the horse’s language. Using that skill to bond with the equine based on using his herd mentality and instincts. It considered a much gentler way of dealing with horses.
  • Groundwork – Work done between horse and trainer before the rider ever attempts to mount the horse. It is meant to teach the horse boundaries, good ground manners, how to open up it’s feet and how to respect you as the head horse in the herd.
  • Horseman – Someone who is a good rider as well as a horse lover. He or she should be knowledgeable as any equestrian and can share that knowledge with the horse that he or she rides.
  • Pressure – Cues and tools used to get the animal to understand what you are attempting to have happen with the animal’s response. You must teach the animal to yield to pressure. Send clear signals and motivate your horse.
  • Sacking out or Desensitizing – The process of exposing the horse to many stimulants to allow the animal time to get used to things that may be foreign or scary.
“What Else Do I Get?”

There are many more must-know terms covered in this lesson, and you can learn them as you go along with the training. When training a horse, you should always be firm but fair. That is the best way to establish your leadership over your horse. This lesson is going to dive into how to do that. Your job as a horseperson is to make the horse also want what you want in order to have a seamless, symbiotic relationship. Base your training on positive reinforcement rather than physical force. Emphasize the use of groundwork to establish boundaries and set-up proper and clear communication with the horse.

With that being said, here are 6 beginner horse training essentials you’ll learn in this course:

  • How to hold the right attitude so that your horse ‘understands’ and ‘respects’ you. Yes, horses can ‘feel’ your attitude.
  • How to continually grow as a horse trainer and the fastest way to go from ‘beginner’ to ‘expert’ horse trainer.
  • What tools are essential for horse training. It’s gentle but effective tack for beginner horse training.
  • How to embed your skills and your knowledge into your habits with your horses… so that you take what you learn in this module and put it to use.
  • The one quality that, if you don’t have it, will ruin your connection with your horse.
  • How to develop the traits that make a master horse trainer… traits like heart, desire, attitude, feel, timing, balance, savvy, and experience. On the other hand, your horse must develop (with your help!) respect, impulsion, and flexion. Make sure you know each of these terms and what they mean to your relationship with your horse.

These are the horse training basics that every aspiring horseperson should master. This ‘beginner horse training basics’ course lesson will show you how to develop the traits!

“A stubborn horse walks behind you. An impatient horse walks in front of you. A noble companion walks beside you for life.”
